What is an ifb?

IFB stands for "Intercom Feed Back" or "Interrupted Fold Back". It is a communication system commonly used in live television or radio broadcasts where an on-air talent or presenter can receive information, cues, and instructions from the production crew without it being heard by the audience.

IFB systems typically consist of a small earpiece or earphone worn by the talent, which is connected to a portable device that provides a specific audio feed. This device is usually a belt pack, also known as a "pack", that can be easily attached to the talent's clothing or belt. The production crew can then communicate with the talent using a control panel or a separate communication system.

IFB systems allow the production crew to provide real-time instructions to the on-air talent, such as timing cues, upcoming segments, commercial break reminders, or any other necessary information. This helps in ensuring smooth transitions and accurate on-air performance. The audio feed to the talent is set at a lower volume than the primary audio, allowing them to easily hear the instructions without it being noticeable to the audience.

IFB systems are widely used in television news broadcasting, talk shows, sports commentary, and live event coverage. They are also utilized in radio shows, where hosts or guests may require information or updates from the production team during a broadcast.

In addition to broadcasting, IFB systems are also used in other professional settings such as theater productions, live performances, and corporate events where presenters or performers require stage cues or instructions.
